Dutch Oven Apple Crisp: The Most American Dessert You Can Make at Camp 🍎🔥
Apple crisp around a campfire on July 4th weekend. 🍎🔥 It doesn't get more American than that — and it doesn't get much easier either.
Peel and slice 4-5 apples (any kind — Granny Smith hold up best over heat) and toss them in your Dutch oven with two tablespoons of brown sugar, a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a squeeze of lemon juice. For the topping: mix one cup of oats, half a cup of flour, half a cup of brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and salt, then cut in half a stick of cold butter until it's crumbly. Spread the topping evenly over the apples. Lid on, cook over medium coals with coals on top for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling underneath.
Serve it warm, straight from the pot. If you've got vanilla ice cream in the cooler, now is absolutely the time.
Cost for 6-8 people: about $7. The smell coming off that Dutch oven when you lift the lid: priceless.
